Like many homeowners, you probably never give a second thought to how your residential sewer line transports waste water from your home to the main sewer line. In fact, the only time most people will remember this important plumbing component is when sewerage starts coming up out of their drains. If your sewer line is clogged, it can cause untold damage to your property. Left unchecked, it can cost an arm and a leg to remedy. It can also be very embarrassing especially when you have guests over. Here are some of the signs of a main sewer line clog you should look out for.

1.      Slow Draining

A clog in your plumbing is usually characterized by a slow draining sink or toilet. When the clog affects your main sewer line it will affect all other lines. You’ll notice clogging in your toilet, shower, and sinks. This is one of the common symptoms of an issue with the main sewer line that you should be on the lookout for.

2.      Gurgling

Should you notice a gurgling noise coming from multiple drains, then you should have your main sewer line checked. If the gurgling is only coming from one drain, then it’s probably just an issue with a section of the plumbing. A problem with the main sewer line can also manifest as gurgling in a few drains and slow draining in others. If you suspect that you have a problem with the main sewer line due to a gurgling sound, you should call in a plumber immediately before the situation gets out of hand.

3.      Puddles in The Basement

Have you noticed any water puddles on the floor in your basement? This is a bad sign. You may have a major problem with your main sewer line. This is especially so if the puddle appears around the main line.  It could be some sort of clogging or blockage. However, you should confirm that it is actually not a leak in your plumbing that’s causing the pooling of water. A qualified drain rescue plumber should be able to help with this.

4.      Bubbles in Your Drain

Air can get trapped in your plumbing. When this happens, you’re likely to see bubbles in your drain whenever you pour water down your dink or flush your toilet. If you notice the bubbling in several drains, then you might just be dealing with a bigger issue. Call in a plumber to check your main sewer line.

5.      Leaking Sewer Cleanout

The sewer cleanout is a white or black pipe with a threaded cap. Should you notice leaking around this pipe, then you may just have a clogging issue with your main sewer line. To remedy the problem, remove the cap on the sewer cleanout. This will help release the pressure that has built up in the sewer line. The pressure release will cause the water to jut out towards the outside and not towards your house where damage can be caused.
